Dear Editor:

Can’t your newspaper do something about the custom of hitchhiking?

On a recent trip I counted at least 50 people standing beside the road, asking for rides. Many of them were young women. Don’t they understand how dangerous it is to get into a car driven by a stranger? What do they know about the driver’s character or ability to drive? Nothing!

Many of these young hitchhikers probably come from good families. Don’t their parents teach them anything about the world? I always taught my children not to talk to strangers. I never permitted (允许) them to accept rides from people they didn’t know.

Isn’t there enough crime (犯罪) today without asking for trouble by hitchhiking?

“Equal pay for equal work” is a phrase used by the American women who feel that they are looked down upon by society. They say it is not right for women to be paid less than men for the same work.

People who hold the opposite view (观点)(mainly men) have an answer to this. They say that men have more duties than women. A married man is expected to earn money to support his family and to make the important decision, so it is right for men to be paid more. Some are even against married women working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children are given no attention to. If women are encouraged by equal pay to take full-time jobs, they will be unable to do the things they are best at doing: making a nice home and bringing up their children.  They will have to give up their present position in society.

Women who disagree say they want to escape (逃离) from the limited place which society wishes them to fill and to have freedom to choose between work and home life, or a mixture of the two. Women have the right of equal pay and equal chances.

These women have expressed their opinions forcefully by using the famous saying, “All men are created(创造) equal.” They point out that the meaning of this sentence is “all human beings are created equal.”

60. The women use the phrase “equal pay for equal work” to demand that _____.

A.      men should be paid less than women

B.      men’s work should be harder than women’s

C.      men and women should be paid the same amount of money for the same work

D.     people doing harder work should be paid more

 61. Some people who hold even stronger opinions say that _____.

A.       women should be kind to their husbands

B.        women are too weak to take full-time jobs

C.       home is the best place for women

D.       women should take part-time jobs

 62. According to this passage, some women want to give up _____.

A.        their present position in society

B.         their marriage

C.        their right of equal pay

D.        their home life

 63. The women who disagree say that _____.

A.        women need chances to go out of the home more often

B.        women want more freedom in deciding the kind of life they want

C.        if women are given equal pay, they can do everything instead of men

D.       women are no longer interested in taking care of their homes

C

Let us suppose it is now about AD 2060. Let’s make believe it is about seventy years from now. Of course, things have changed, and life is very different.

Voyages(航行) to the moon are being made every day. It is as easy to take a holiday on the moon today as it is for the people of 1960 to take a holiday in Europe. At a number of scenic spots on the moon, many hotels have been built. The hotels are air-conditioned, naturally. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery(风景) on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment(娱乐)of young and old.

What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven’t yet started to take on their supply of energy directly as electrical current (电流)or as nuclear power . They may some day. But many foods now came in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.

Since there are several times as many people in the world today as they were a hundred years ago, most of our planet’s surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated (灌溉)with water. Crops are no longer destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.

Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.

People are now largely vegetarians(素食者). You see, as the number of people increased, the number of animals decreased. Therefore, the people have to be vegetarians and we are healthier in both our bodies and our minds, too, and we know the causes and the cure of sickness and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more.

Such might be our life in 2060.

Japanese students work very hard but many are very unhappy. They feel great pressure (压力) from their parents to do well in school and in college. Most students are always being told by their parents to study harder so that they can have successful future. Although this may be good advice for those students who are very bright, it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning.

Unfortunately, a number of students actually kill themselves. Others are after comfort in using drugs. Some students, however, do bad things with groups of bad people and turn to crime(犯罪). Many of them have tried very hard at school but have failed in certain examinations and have disappointed (使...失望) their parents. Such students feel that they are less important than everyone else they meet and leave school before they have finished their study.

It is surprising that although most Japanese parents are anxious for their children to do well at school, they do not help them in any way. Many parents feel that they are unable to help their children with their lessons and that it is the teachers’ job to help their children.

To make matter worse, a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku-cram schools. These schools are open during the evenings and on weekends, and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams; they do not try to educate students in any real sense of the world. It thus comes as a great surprise to know that almost three quarters of the junior high school population attend these cram schools.

Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the length of students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags. Child psychologists(心理学家) now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society. They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance (指导)nor training in becoming good citizens.

68. According to the passage, a lot of Japanese students are unhappy at school because _______.

A. they work very hard

B. they find they can’t do well in school

C. they feel unimportant

D. they are under too much pressure from their parents

69. Because of their failure at school, some students ________.

A. go to cram school for better education

B. leave school without finishing their study

C. are against the school rules

D. have quarrels with their parents

70. In the fourth paragraph, “cram school” probably means the school in which ________.

A. you can be taken good care of by the teachers

B. teachers are responsible for their students

C. you learn as much as possible in a short time before taking the examinations

D. students have their classes in the evening

71. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A. A lot of parents in Japan help their children with their studies.

B. Cram schools can’t provide a good education for students.

C. Many parents encourage their children to study hard.

D. Many students become criminals because of their failure.

America is a society in which children have watched about 18,000 television commercials(商业广告) by the time that they have reached their middle teens. My friend Jolie learned this fact a few weeks ago and decided to do something about it. She thinks that the number of commercials that children see can influence(影响) the way in which they view the world. That is, Jolie believes that children who watch so many ads will grow up to believe that the most important thing in life is to buy, buy, buy! This, says Jolie, is wrong. A little child cannot understand advertisements for what they are and so believe totally in what he or she hears.

I have been thinking about what Jolie has told me. I suppose that she is right. I know that it is easy to control(控制) the minds of children because they don’t see things logically(逻辑地), as grown-ups do. And, I am upset myself at how the advertisers can control a child’s view on the world. I think I should join Jolie in her efforts to change advertising methods when it comes to advertisements for children. I really have a responsibility(责任) to make sure that future generations are given every chance to develop their minds without being influenced by anything bad.

Of course, there is another side to the problem. After all, parents ought to take responsibility for what their children watch and how much television they see. I know that many parents just want their children to be quiet, and so they let them watch as much television as they want. But, in the long run, the methods of advertisers have great power because we are a society of consumers(消费者). I only hope that someday there can be an answer to the problem. Children need our guidance, not the guidance of advertisers.

72. Compared with grown-ups, children can _______.

A.  not tell good advertisements from bad ones.

B.   be more interested in TV advertisements

C.  sit for longer hours watching ads.

D.  not judge things reasonably

73. The author thinks that ______.

A.  children should not be influenced by TV ads

B.   television watching is unhealthy to children

C.  most TV ads are telling lies

D.  little children have difficulty in understanding ads

74. In order to prevent children from watching too much television, the author suggests that ______.

A.  parents keep their children away from the television sets

B.   advertisements be changed to meet the needs of children

C.  more programs be started to give guidance to children

D.  ways be found to help the least influence of commercials

75. The main idea of the passage is that _______.

  A. children shouldn’t watch any television commercials

  B. television advertising has a bad influence on children

  C. the number of commercials that children see can influence the way in which they view the world

  D. parents ought to take responsibility for what and how much their children watch on TV
